How We Spent Our Summer: Sylvia Maas & Kristi Sisson

We wanted to know how Soroptimist members Sylvia Maas and Kristi Sisson were doing this summer, and as it turns out, they were busy achieving incredible feats. From cycling across the country in the Race Across America (RAAM) to celebrating birthdays, hiking, and setting new records, it was a whirlwind adventure!

Here’s what Kristi had to say about their action-packed summer:

Sylvia and her teammate Tami Kerns rode in RAAM, the Race Across America, from Oceanside, CA, to Atlantic City, NJ, in 8 days and 14 hours!!!!!

Our next adventure was going to see fellow Soroptimist Kristen Mumford (and her husband Kevin Ryan) in Vermont, for some hiking, home-cooked meals, and a real bed to sleep on.

Then we went to Marquette, MI, to see fellow Borregans Carol and Paul Maas (no relation to Sylvie) to celebrate Sylvie's birthday and the 4th of July. Peanut had never been to Marquette, and she loved it (except for the fireworks). We then drove down to Iowa to see a friend and RAAM female winner Sarah Cooper and Deanne Herr. Sylvie did some gravel bike riding before the long drive home.

Just last week, Sylvie and Tami went back to participate in the HOODOO 500 Ultra Cycling event. This time they competed in the "staged race," which leaves a day earlier, and we all get to stay in a hotel at night. Then all the racers leave at 7 a.m. the following morning.

The girls beat the boys and set a new record of 34 hrs 55 min.

It was cooler this year, but the winds were relentless. However, the girls just kept moving forward and won again!

We’ll all be getting back together in Borrego Springs soon… and we look forward to hearing about YOUR summer vacation!
